Planning tips for your Cades Cove Session in The Smokies

Are you and your partner planning your very first adventure to the Great Smoky Mountains? Here’s everything you need to know to make your trip stress-free, magical, and photo-ready!

1. Plan to spend 3 hours minimum in Cades Cove

Did you know 2 million people visit Cades Cove each year? That’s how breathtaking this location is! That being said, expect to plan a minimum of 3 hours in the loop! Tell yourself, this is an experience, there are no timelines… for just one day! I’ve seen bears on MANY occasions, there’s real wildlife living here, traffic comes to a halt for all bear sightings! Enjoy the ride and snap a quick pic! PLEASE DO NOT APPROACH OR FEED WILDLIFE!

2. No Cell Service

Once you enter The Great Smoky Mountain National Park, there is NO cell service! So please have any and all directions printed or saved as a photo on your phone (including returning back home!)

Also, important to note, have a FULL TANK of gas! There is no way to know how long the loop could take!

3. Things to bring in your car

Think of Cades Cove like a field trip! Bring water for every member in the session…and then a little more! Also, pack a lunch or bring snacks! After your session, you may be thirsty and a little hungry, plus you’ll be in your car awhile, make the best of the time waiting! Other things that tend to get overlooked are other essentials like spf, and bringing bug spray!

4. Restrooms and Changing Locations

I recommend using the restroom right before we head out together into Cades Cove loop! There are restrooms located in the Cades Cove Campground and Picnic area before you get in Cades Cove Loop - last call!

There are restrooms at the Visitor Center, right before you enter the exit portion of the loop! You still have about 45 minutes left to go on the loop! Cell service resumes about 90 minutes from the Exit/Gift shop area! (in my experience!)

Lastly, I love providing the option for wardrobe changes, that being said, be prepared to change in your car if you were wanting a second outfit!

5. Wednesdays Are Closed to Motor Vehicles

Cades Cove Loop Road is closed for all motor vehicles each Wednesday from May through September to provide for pedestrian and bicycle use. NO exceptions! So keep in mind it’s best to shoot on other days!

6. Traveling Couples

I have worked with many couples who are traveling in for their sessions! Many return back home that night, but others make a day of Cades Cove and make plans to stay the night in Townsend for a more relaxed nature vibe, or Gatlinburg for a more energy packed experience. Maryville would be another great nearby town!
